Do not end off with CC2 but pull and make the last loop bigger, or add a marker in the last loop, so that the stitches don’t start pulling out.

End off MC & CC1 and weave in yarn tails before trying to embroider watermelon seeds.
Embroider the watermelon seeds using a double strand of black scrubby yarn if you choose. I inserted the needle from behind at the base of every increase (2sc in same st) at round 4. Then inserted the needle to the back at the top of the sc stitches.

Next I put watermelon seeds two rounds up, positioning the stitches between the seeds below.

Fold the watermelon in half with the last loop that you made right at the fold.

Make a strong crease remembering that the fold begins at the last loop.

With the watermelon folded in half, insert your hook back in the loop, and begin to sc through all stitches, closing the watermelon. When you get to the fold at the opposite side, chain 15 (Optional hanging loop) and slp st back into the last st made. End off and weave in all ends.

The Watermelon Seeds Are Optional

One of my favorite finishing touches is embroidering the little black watermelon seeds with Scrubby Sparkle Yarn.

This simple detail takes only a few minutes but gives the dishcloth so much personality. Of course, if you prefer a cleaner look, you can certainly leave the seeds off.

Either way, you’ll end up with a beautiful crochet watermelon dishcloth that’s ready for your kitchen.

Tips for Crocheting the Perfect Cotton Dishcloth

Keep Even Tension

Cotton yarn has very little stretch, so relaxed, even tension will help your dishcloth lay beautifully.

Weave in All Ends Securely

Since this dishcloth will be washed often, take a few extra moments to weave in every yarn tail securely.

Add the Seeds Before Crocheting the Watermelon Closed

Wait until you’ve completed the dishcloth before embroidering the seeds. This allows you to space them evenly across the watermelon.
