Stitch Guide
CLUSTER or Mini Bean Stitch = insert hook in st, draw up a loop, 2 loops on hook, YO insert hook in same st, draw up a loop, 4 loops on hook, YO pull through all 4 loops on hook, CLUSTER made
join w/ = join with
SLP ST = Slip Stitch
CH = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
BPSC = Inset hook from back to front to back, around post of corresponding stitch, YO, pull up loop, YO draw thru 2 loops on hook
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
SP = Space
BLO = Back Loop Only
nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated; x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
The Cluster stitch is unique, as each row of stitches has a right and left tilt to it. It is easy to use the CH 1 space to execute the cluster, but it will not give you the right, left tilt. The Pic below is showing where to insert your hook, for the next row of clusters. Pic 1: Notice the arrows are pointing to the “V” where you insert your hook to execute the cluster stitch. You are executing the cluster directly into the cluster st.
Pic. 2 shows the cluster stitch that was made, and it will tilt, when you execute the next Cluster stitch.
Pattern Notes:
1: Beginning CH 1 of each Row or Round, does not count as a stitch
2: Beginning CH 2 of each Row or Round, does not count as a stitch
Square Base: L- 11/8mm hook
Beginning Chain – Holding 2 strands of yarn; CH 16 (Chain the foundation Chain in a loose fashion)
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across; CH1 and Turn (This is your foundation, and executing your SC loosely is advised. It will keep the base from curling.) (15 SC)
Row 2: CLUSTER in 1st st; *CH1, skip nxt st, CLUSTER in nxt st; * 7x; CH 2, Turn (8 Clusters) Row 3: CLUSTER in 1st CLUSTER; * CH 1, CLUSTER in nxt CLUSTER; * 7x; CH 2, Turn (8 Clusters) Row 4-12: Repeat Row 3
Row 13: Repeat Row 3, (but do not CH 2 or Turn at the end of the row)
1 Edge Round with Basket Rounds following. (Round numbers will start over)
Round 1: CH 1, 13 SC spaced evenly down the side; 3 SC at corner; 13 SC across the bottom; w/3 SC in nxt corner; 13 SC up the other side; 3 SC at corner; 13 SC across the top; ending with 3 SC at last corner; join w/SLP ST when you arrive back at the beginning. (13 SC on each side of washcloth; 13 SC across the top and bottom; with 3 SC at each corner; 64 total stitches)
When executing the edge stitching across the bottom row, where the foundation CH that has a row of SC worked into it, if you drop below the SC Row, it will look like one row of edging. Pic1 has an arrow pointing to the opening where you should insert your hook. Pic 2 is showing how the loop has been drawn up to make the SC. Pic 3 Shows how this can give the illusion of one SC row.
Round 2: CH 1; BPSC in nxt ST, and in each st around; join w/SLP ST in 1st HDC (64SC)
(I highly recommend switching to a “K” hook. If you prefer more of a bowl shaped basket with softer sides, continue using “L” hook
Round 3: CH 2 ; Cluster in 1st st, CH 1,; * Skip ST, Cluster in nxt st, CH1;* 31x; join w/SLP ST in 2nd CH of beg. CH 2; CH 2 and Turn (32 Clusters)
Round 4: Cluster in 1st Cluster st, CH 1,; * Skip ST, Cluster in nxt Cluster st, CH1;* 31x; join w/SLP ST in 2nd CH of beg. CH 2; CH 2 and Turn (32 Clusters)
Round 5 & 6: Repeat Round 4. Please note: CH 1 and Turn at the end of round 6, instead of CH 2.
Round 7: (The outside of the basket should be facing you) SC in each Cluster and CH 1 space around. Join w/ SLP ST in beg. CH 1; Do not turn (64 stitches)
You may have noticed that your basket isn’t as square as the base any longer. One way to remedy that is to skip a stitch at each corner during Round 8. Remember that you executed 3 SC at each corner? Mark the 2nd stitch in that 3 stitch corner sequence you executed at each corner of Round 1. Then place a marker in the stitch that is the closest to being directly above the marker. Just eyeball it, this is a very forgiving step, and does not have to be exact. Mark all four corners, and remember, you are skipping the Round 7 stitch that you marked.
Round 8: SC in 1st st, and in each st around, making sure to skip the corner stitch that you have marked; join w/SLP ST to beg. CH 1; Do not turn (60 stitches)
Round 9: SC in the 1st st, and in each ST around; join w/ SLP ST in beg. CH 1.
Small Beading row follows. You
Round 10: CH 1, SC in 1st st, CH 1; * Skip ST, SC in nxt st, CH 1; * around the top of the basket, join w/SLP ST to beg. CH 1; End off secure and weave in ends.
