You read that right, 100% Cotton Yarn Is NOT A Good Choice For Chemo Caps!
As a “Breast Cancer Survivor” I want to help all fiber artist understand a bit more about what makes a good Chemo Cap. I will be sharing more tid bits in the coming weeks.

As the photo above states, the skin can become very sensitive when losing their hair.
The hair follicles will hurt. The skin can become irritable.
100% cotton can be too scratchy for sensitive skin.
The hat will soften up a bit after a couple of washes, when adding fabric softener, but it may not get soft enough for irritable skin.
If you are crocheting or knitting chemo caps to donate to someone you personally know, then I would ask them how they feel.
Ask a few leading questions to find out if their skin can tolerate 100% cotton.
We all want to minister to our loved ones who are going through a hard time, so connect with them.
They may be happily tell you they would love a 100% cotton hat.

If you are crocheting or knitting a bunch of hats to donate to a Cancer Center or Hospital near you, they may welcome anything you will donate.
Then again they may have strict guidelines. It is important to follow their rules.
So should you make a cotton chemo cap?
YES! Crochet or Knit 100% Cotton Chemo Caps if you are sure it will be accepted and it won’t scratch or irritate the skin of the recipient.
A good alternative to 100% Cotton is a Cotton Blend. There are many cotton blend yarns on the market.
I will share more about those in future Blog posts.
I have designed Many Chemo Caps over the years.
There are a few things to keep in mind when crocheting a chemo cap. There are other reasons to consider and these are just a few.
1. The hat needs to be slightly smaller and shorter, as they won’t have hair or very little hair.
2. They may want it to be close fitting so that they can sleep in the cap, and it won’t come off of their head.
3. Some chemo patients may have sores on their head and texture in a hat, may be unwelcome.
