A preemie sized crocheted hat, with baby dinoaur spikes. The hat is cream with blue stripes at the brim and the dino spikes are blue.

This crocheted preemie hat is more than just a project – it’s a gesture of love and hope.

The cute baby dinosaur spikes are such an adorable touch, turning a simple hat into a fun accessory that brings smiles to both crafters and those receiving these tiny treasures.

three Preemie Baby Dinosaur hats. The top hat is a newborn size, the middle hat is preemie size and the bottom hat is micro preemie size.

Using this crochet pattern to make Baby Dinosaur hats for a NICU that is local to you, will bring joy to mother’s and father’s who are hurting for their tiny baby.

I learned first hand when my youngest grandson was born 30 weeks early. Putting a whimsical hat on my little grandson’s head made my daughter so happy and proud. It realy lifted the spirits of the nurses and doctors as well. It was also salve to my hurting heart, to do something small for my little grand baby.

This is the back of the Preemie Baby Dinosaur Crochet Hat.

I hope you will join me in making preemie hats for your local NICU.

I want my skills to benefit other’s who are hurting, and I am sure you feel the same way. Crochet can make a difference, one stitch at a time.

Crochet Pattern for the Preemie Baby Dinosaur Hat

Yarn used:
I Love This Yarn or Caron Simply Soft, or any other worsted weight yarn that is soft and will not be scratchy to the baby’s skin. This design falls into the “Scraps” category, but to be safe, here’s the approximate yarn amounts. MC=100-120 yds; CC=40-50 yds

G-6/4.00 mm – 4”x4” 12 rows high x 16 hdc across

Designer Notes:
1. Please check the gauge before making the hat. This hat does have a bit of stretch to it. Keep in mind that it is designed for a preemie.
2. The color changes during the sc rounds, right before the Ribbing, is optional.
3. Beginning chains do not count as a stitch.
4. Executing the baby Dino Spikes will happen around the posts of the stitches. You will fold the hat in half, and insert the hook from front to back around the posts of the stitches indicated in the pattern.

Baby Dino Spikes

Fold the hat in half, making sure that the joining seam is at the side of the hat.

Baby Spike 1: Attach yarn around the post of a hdc that is on the fold, at Round 3 (insert hook from the front to the back and draw up a loop. You will be executing the stitches around the post at the Round inicated) proceed to, ch1, sc, hdc, ch2 picot & hdc; then proceed to Baby Spike 2.

Baby Spike 2: insert hook around the post of the hdc that is on the fold of Round 2; proceed to sc, hdc, dc, ch2 picot, dc & hdc; proceed to Baby Spike 3.

Baby Spike 3: You are at the crown of the hat. You will be using Round 1 and the ch3 ring. You will crochet the last three stitches of this spike across the ring, inserting your hook from front to back. Just as if you are going around the post, but you will be inserting the hook under the ring, from front to back at the fold.

Insert hook around the post of round 1 on the front sc, hdc, dc; under the ring execute trb, ch2 picot, trb & dc;
You are now going down the back side of the hat.

Baby Spike 4: repeat baby spike 2, going around the post of the st that is on the fold @ Round 2,

Baby Spike 5: going around the post of the st that is on the fold @ Round 3; sc, hdc, ch2 picot, hdc & slp st

I love making NICU hats and this will definitely be one that I will do. How much fun this would be to see the nurses faces.

Thank you for your donations. I am imagining the nurses’ response. You’ll have to let me know how they respond.

You referenced YouTube but do you have this pattern on your channel? Maybe I got impatient but I did not see it and the spikes are giving me trouble.
