How to Crochet a Puppy Dog Preemie Hat – Free Pattern

I want to show you how to crochet a Puppy Dog Preemie hat. You can easily use scrap yarn to make these adorable Puppy Dog hats for babies who were born premature. Purchase the add free pdf that has a bonus earflap puppy dog hat in 0-3 mo. size, now at ETSY or RAVELRY.

Find the free crochet patterns for a 1. micro preemie, 2.preemie and 3. newborn size down below. The 0-3 month size with mini earflaps is included in the purchased pattern.

A micro preemie puppy dog hat, with little bows at the ears.

Crocheting Preemie hats is dear to my heart

Recently my grandson was born 10 weeks premature. He spent a few weeks in the NICU.

Now he is healthy and happy and can wear a 0-3 month puppy dog hat with small earflaps. It will be a bonus crochet pattern that is a part of the ad free pdf that can be purchased at RAVELRY or ETSY.

The (0-3mo) puppy dog hat pattern can be found at this BLOG POST & has the same heart eye patch to help celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The 0-3 month hat has small earflaps to help keep my grandson’s little ears and neck warm. It was concluded that it looked just as cute without heart buttons. You will find the 0-3 month hat on a separate blog post.

A photo tutorial is included in the ad free pdf or is found at this Blog Post. The tutorial has tips and tricks on how to sew on the buttons, heart eye patch and ears..

The first preemie hat that I made for my little one, had baby dinosaur spikes on it. When my daughter saw it, she was so excited. She immediately put it on her baby’s head. The nurses in the NICU were so happy too.

Tiny whimsical things like a dinosaur or puppy hat can lift the spirits of those caring for a preemie.

A photo collage of the Give me your heart Preemie puppy dog hats

It would bring me great joy if you would make a few of these preemie hats and donate them to your local NICU.

I experienced first hand, what joy a little hat can bring a hurting mother and father, as they are sitting at the bedside of their little one. Please note that each NICU has different requirements. They may not allow buttons or bows.

Three preemie puppy dog hats with heart eye patches.

Yarn used:

I Love This Yarn or Caron Simply Soft, or any other worsted weight yarn that is soft and will not be scratchy to the baby’s skin. This design falls into the “Scraps” category, but to be safe, here’s the approximate yarn amounts. MC=100-120 yds; CC=40-50 yds

Gauge

G-6/4.00 mm – 4”x4” 12 rows high x 16 hdc across
H-8/5.00 mm – 3”x3” 12 rows high x 12 hdc across

Crochet Hook:

Micro Preemie (2-3lbs) G-6/4.00 mm
Preemie (3-4lbs) H-8/5.00 mm
Newborn ( 4-5lbs) – H-8/5.00 mm

Supplies:

2 Heart Shaped buttons in size of your choosing. I used ½” & ¾” heart buttons.
Sewing needle and thread to sew on the buttons and the optional bows.
Optional: Small bits of ¼” ribbon tied into a pull tie bow.

Video below will show you how to make a pull tie bow is below. It uses ⅝” ribbon, but the concept is still the same.

Stitch Guide:

join w/ = join with
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = single Crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
sp = Space
nxt = Next
st = Stitch
*  * = Execute sequence between the stars, the number of times stated
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on.

Follow this video below. It will visually walk you through how to crochet the three mini hearts.

Designer Notes:

1. Please check the gauge before making the hat. This hat does have a bit of stretch to it. Keep in mind that it is designed for a preemie.
2. Beginning chains do not count as a stitch.
3. There are two heart sizes for you to use as the eye patch.

Purchase the ad free pdf that includes the 0-3 month and the Tutorial on how to embellish the hat, at RAVELRY or ETSY.

    Love the pattern Thank you. I’m having a problem with row 5 on the ear flap4-6 reads
    Row 4: sc across the bottom of the earflap and down the opposite side, you will be at the back
    of the hat, sc in the nxt 5 st’s, ch 1; hdc in nxt 10 st’s, ch1 & turn
    Row 5: ch1; hdc in joining st and in the nxt 24 st’s, ch1 & turn; (25 hdc)
    Row 6: 2 hdc tog; hdc in nxt 6 st’s; 2hdc tog; ch 1 & turn (8 hdc)
    do you have a picture of how row 5 is done, seems like 25 stitches is to much

    I am going to make this pattern to donate to our local hospital, it is so cute. My dear friend passed away last year, she was my crochet buddy and got me into making hats and afghans to donate.
    Hopefully, this will bring some joy to an otherwise stressful time.

That bond between you two was broken physically but not entirely, because of your memories you two working together. What a blessing working with our hands and then being able to connect with others can be to our hearts. Sending up a prayer of comfort for you Linda!

    The puppy dog preemie cap is adorable. I love the idea of making them to donate. A travel kit with the necessary yarns would be easy to keep in my purse or car for travel and/or appointments crocheting; by year’s end, I could have a box full.📦💝
    I typically donate preemie items through Charli’s Love, because they wash, sanitize and package to meet the requirements of hospitals all over the nation.

My son was a preemie born 3 months premature in ’79’ would have loved to have made one for him. He was so tiny 3 lbs and 4 ozs and wore clothes made from doll patterns and wash clothes lined with men’s handkerchiefs for diapers. Thank you for all the patterns you share and especially the ones for preemie babies. God bless, Sandra G

    We’ve shared before why we both have a heart for preemies. We have 2 premie sons, one in RNICU. We also have a miracle granddaughter who started out as a premier. All 3 children are bright, physically well, and gifted in many areas. These cute hats will be blessings to youngsters and their anxious parents.

    So adorable!! Great job including the different weights with the age sizes. I’d live to make this hat for my future great grands.
