How to Embroider Watermelon Seeds on Crochet

Those little black watermelon seeds are what really make a crocheted watermelon project come to life!

Today I’m showing you how I add embroidered watermelon seeds to my crochet watermelon basket using two strands of black yarn.

The Seeds have been embroidered on the crocheted watermelon basket. There is a black bow at the handle.

How to Add Watermelon Seeds to a Crochet Basket

For this project, I’m adding the watermelon seeds after the basket has been completely crocheted.

I use approximately 3 yards of black yarn and a yarn needle, working with a double strand of yarn for each side of the basket. There will be 6 yards in total used.

I don’t try to make every watermelon seed perfectly symmetrical. Instead, I randomly place them around the basket, changing the direction of the seeds as I work.

Let the Crochet Stitches Guide You

One of the things I show in the video is how I place my needle into the crochet stitches rather than simply going down into the open spaces.

I also pay attention to what is happening on the inside of the basket as I’m working. I use my fingers to feel underneath the stitches so I can make sure I’m not creating unwanted bumps or pulling the yarn too tightly.

the yarn needle is being inserted into the crochet stitch, not the open spaces.

You may find that you need to adjust your needle placement a little as you work. That’s completely normal!

In fact, you’ll see me do exactly that in the video.

Watch How I Embroider the Watermelon Seeds

Rather than giving you a long written tutorial, I think you’ll find it much easier to watch me demonstrate this technique.

In the video, I show you:

  • How I use two strands of black yarn
  • Where I place the watermelon seeds
  • How I decide which direction each seed should face
  • How I work the yarn into the crochet stitches
  • How I keep the seeds from being pulled too tightly
  • How I check the inside of the basket as I work
  • How I fix a spot when something doesn’t look quite right

The nice thing about this technique is that the seeds don’t have to be perfect. I simply eyeball the placement and change the direction of the seeds as I work around the basket.

Just like real watermelon seeds, they’re not all going to look exactly alike!

The watermelon seeds are randomly placed around the sides of the basket.

Make Your Own Crochet Watermelon Basket

If you’re ready to make the entire basket, you’re in luck!

The Crochet Watermelon Basket pattern is free here on my blog.

It has handles, a cute reverse single crochet detail, and makes such a fun summer crochet project.
